   Aren't they?

   The switches seem to be motivated by more profound reasons that just user experience though, might explain why those nice beautiful mac apps didn't stop them.

   Except for iMovie projects (but I don't know because I never used it), I don't see very much where the problem is. Both iCal and AddressBook will save or export to industry standards ICS and VCF. Keynote stores presentation as XML (and I mean real XML not "embraced and extended" XML). iTunes and iPhoto libraries are perfectly browsable via the Finder... DRM? Come on, everybody knows about FairPlay and such! ;)

   I agree the situation is worse with pro apps such as Logic but that's the case with all professional applications from most vendors (Just ook at Cubase, Adobe Illustrator, ...) and on all platforms and such professional grade media production application simply do not exist on Linux at this time.

   What was bothering Mark Pilgrim was the lack of options when he got stuck with a broken iCal database. That's frustrating indeed but at the end of the day, a corrupted file is a corrupted file. What are the odds you can retrieve data from an invalid OpenOffice document? Not that much I guess... In my opinion, It's more a matter of trust than (cheap) ethics.

   I guess nobody has this kind of answer but your guess will influence your choice of platform.

   I think Apple knows very well that if they don't do the right thing for their customers, there's simply no point making any deal with the content industry as no one would buy their stuff. ;)

   But as always it's a matter of tradeof, they wouldn't be running the best content delivery platform of the moment if they had sold plain vanilla mp3's...

   I'm certainly not ready to leave behind all the advantages and the cutting edge software that runs exclusively on OS X for this kind of issues... Linux was fun playing with back in 1997 but I had too much time on my hands then, now I need stuff like transparent wifi switching, zerotime wakeup, etc that really works out of the box.
