I incidentally noticed a very clever feature of the iPod Shuffle: when you unplug the headphones cord, the playback is automatically paused. This kind of detail tells you a lot about Apple engineers outstanding care for detail.
this is already the case with the latest ipod (version before the color and photo ipod, 4th gen i believe ?)
I don't think my 3G iPod has this feature already but I noticed that the AirPort Express base station also had a sensor embedded in the audio output socket so it seems like standard practice now.
